1) Der Wettkampf fand an der Schule statt.
2) Der Wettkampf fand in der Schule statt.

Beides ist möglich, mit jeweils unterschiedlicher Bedeutung:

1) Der Wettkampf fand an der Schule statt, nicht am Rathaus.
2) Der Wettkampf fand in der Schule statt, nicht außerhalb der Schule.

1) Schule = Einrichtung
2) Schule = Gebäude
